The Story of Sasa Coffee
The story of Sasa Coffee begins on the slopes of Mount Elgon highlands, a region where altitude, climate, and fertile volcanic soil provide ideal conditions for producing world-class coffee. The coffee bean holds a special place in the Bugisu society. With a longstanding tradition of coffee farming, it symbolizes our rich cultural heritage, economic opportunity, and a way of life attuned to nature.
Coffee has been a family tradition for over four generations, during which we have cultivated a profound respect for natural resources and forged personal bonds with local coffee farmers. Our ancestors have refined the art of sowing, harvesting, and drying since the 19th century; for them, coffee offered a path to a more abundant future.
Leading the second generation, Difasi Mabwa became a Cooperative Officer, advocating for fairer, more sustainable practices for Ugandan coffee growers post-independence. He later chronicled the history of Bugisu cooperatives in A History of Cooperatives in Bugisu (1913 – 1985).
Sixty years later, Francis Masuba advanced our family’s coffee legacy by perfecting its final step: roasting. In 2015, Francis founded Sasa Coffee, introducing the Elgon Blend, celebrated for its robust flavor and caramel undertones, to coffee lovers worldwide.
Today, the Masuba family continues to steward Sasa Coffee’s vision. Guided by a deep respect for the land and the farmers who nurture it, they are committed to uplifting farming communities through fair trade and sustainable development initiatives, ensuring the legacy of Sasa Coffee thrives for generations to come.
